If you’ve been puppy-shopping in Bangalore, you’ve likely seen “KCI registered” or “UKC registered” mentioned everywhere. Here’s what these terms actually mean, in plain language.
What is KCI?
KCI stands for the Kennel Club of India — the country’s primary breed registry body. KCI registration confirms a dog’s breed lineage and parentage, similar to a birth certificate that traces back through the family tree.
What is UKC?
UKC (United Kennel Club) is an international registry, historically US-based, that also registers purebred dogs, including many imported to and bred within India.
What registration confirms:
- • The puppy’s breed and lineage are documented and traceabl
- • The parent dogs are recorded in the registry
- • There’s an official paper trail if you ever want to breed, show, or verify pedigree later
What registration does NOT confirm:
- • It does not certify the puppy’s current health
- • It does not guarantee vaccination status
- • It does not replace a veterinary health check
This is an important distinction. A puppy can be fully KCI registered and still need proper vaccination and a vet health certificate separately — the two systems serve different purposes. Registration is about lineage; a health certificate is about the puppy’s physical condition right now.
Why this matters when buying in Bangalore
Ask any breeder for both: the registration papers AND a vet-issued health certificate with vaccination records. A responsible breeder provides both without hesitation. If a seller only offers one, ask specifically for the other — reputable places don’t have a problem sharing complete documentation.
Our approach
Every puppy from VRPets comes with KCI/UKC registration where applicable, alongside full vaccination records and a vet health check — because papers alone don’t tell you if your puppy is actually healthy today.
