First 7 Days With Your New Puppy

Bringing a puppy home is exciting, but the first week sets the tone for everything that follows. Here’s what actually matters during those first 7 days.

Day 1: Keep it calm, not exciting
Your puppy has just left its litter, its mother, and everything familiar. Resist the urge to invite everyone over to meet them immediately. A quiet home, a designated sleeping spot, and access to water is all they need on day one.

Days 2-3: Establish a feeding routine
Stick to the same food your breeder was using — switching diets abruptly causes stomach upset. Feed at consistent times, 3-4 times a day for young puppies, and always have fresh water available.

Day 3-5: Schedule your first vet visit
If your puppy hasn’t already had a vet check before pickup, book one within the first few days. This confirms overall health and lets your vet map out the remaining vaccination schedule specific to your puppy’s age and breed.

Vaccination follow-ups
Puppies typically need a series of vaccinations spaced a few weeks apart — not a single shot. Keep a written record (your breeder should provide one) and mark upcoming due dates on your calendar immediately.

Days 5-7: Start gentle routines
Begin light house-training routines and short positive interactions. Avoid overwhelming your puppy with strangers, loud environments, or long car rides this early.

A note on Bangalore specifically
Between traffic noise, apartment living, and the city’s unpredictable weather, Bangalore puppies benefit from a slightly slower introduction to the outside world compared to puppies raised in quieter settings. Give your puppy an extra few days indoors before regular walks begin.
